Why Edinburgh students need storage at all
If you are an international student, the gap is worse, because taking everything home is not an option and shipping it twice costs more than storing it once.
Three things make the Edinburgh version of this problem sharper than most cities:
- The deadline is real and it is early. University of Edinburgh accommodation requires residents to be out by 10am on the lease end date, which is a hard stop rather than a guideline.
- Everyone moves in the same fortnight. Storage, vans and help all compete for the same few weeks in June, and demand for storage in this city peaks in May as students plan ahead.
- Most student flats are tenements. Getting a term’s worth of belongings down three flights and into a vehicle is the part people underestimate.
What you actually need to store, and what you do not
Worth storing:
- Bedding, duvets and pillows, which are bulky but light
- Kitchen equipment, if you bought your own rather than using a furnished set
- Books and course materials you will need again
- Winter clothing and coats
- Desk lamps, monitors, printers and anything you bought for the room
- A mini fridge, if you have one, though it needs defrosting and standing time like any fridge freezer before it goes into storage and again when it comes out
Usually not worth storing:
- Anything you can replace for less than the cost of storing it over a summer
- Food, which most storage terms prohibit anyway
- Furniture that came with the flat, which is not yours to move
- Paperwork you can photograph and recycle
Measure before you book. Storage is priced by volume, and the difference between four boxes and twelve is the difference between a locker and a room.
The options, honestly compared
| Option | Suits | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Self storage unit | Larger volumes, or sharing with flatmates | You must get everything there and back yourself, and units are often larger than you need |
| Student storage service | Boxes only, collected and redelivered | Priced per item, so it climbs quickly with furniture |
| Removals firm with storage | A full room, or a flat being emptied | Sized for households, so it is overkill for four boxes |
| A friend’s flat or a family garage | Small volumes and tight budgets | Depends entirely on goodwill, and there is no insurance |
Splitting a unit between three or four flatmates is the single most effective way to cut the cost, because the same unit holds several people’s belongings and the summer rate is divided. Agree in advance who collects what and when, because a shared unit with one person holding the key causes problems in September.
The bit most guides skip: getting it there
Practical points that matter in this city:
- Parking is not a given. Marchmont, Newington, Tollcross and much of the Southside sit in controlled parking zones, so a vehicle cannot simply wait outside while you load.
- The Low Emission Zone applies to vans too. A vehicle entering the city centre zone must meet the standard or the keeper receives a penalty, which is worth checking before borrowing a friend’s van.
- Stairs take longer than you think. A tenement carry with no lift roughly doubles the time compared with level access.
- June is the busiest fortnight of the year. Book transport before you book storage, because transport runs out first.
If it is genuinely just boxes, this is small-load work rather than a removals job, and man with a van in Edinburgh is the right size of booking. If you are emptying a whole flat with flatmates, or you want collection, storage and redelivery quoted as one job, that is removals and storage in Edinburgh.
What to ask before you book anything
- Is it priced by volume or by item? Per-item pricing suits boxes and punishes furniture.
- What is the minimum term? Some require a month’s minimum even if you need six weeks.
- Is access included? Some units allow you in during opening hours, others charge for retrieval.
- What is insured, and for how much? Cover is often separate and often capped low.
- What happens if you return late? September arrival dates slip, and rolling into an extra month is a common cost.
Get the return date in writing. The most common problem we see is not the storage itself but redelivery, where a student arrives back for a September start and finds the earliest available slot is a fortnight after their new tenancy begins.
When storage is the wrong answer
- If you are graduating and leaving the city, storing a summer’s worth of belongings you will collect once makes little sense. Ship what matters and clear the rest.
- If it is four boxes, a friend’s spare room or a family garage will beat any commercial rate, and there is no shame in asking.
- If your next tenancy starts in July or August, a short overlap on rent may cost less than storage plus two moves.
- If most of it is replaceable, price the storage against replacement honestly. Kitchen equipment and bedding often lose that comparison.
The same question comes up whenever anyone moves to a smaller space, and we cover the routes out in our guide to downsizing and what will not fit. Edinburgh has an active reuse culture over the summer. Charity shops, student buy-and-sell groups and community reuse projects take furniture and kitchen equipment, and it is a better outcome than paying to store something you will not want in September.
Common questions about student storage in Edinburgh
When should I book student storage in Edinburgh?
April or early May for a June move-out. Demand in this city peaks in May because that is when students plan ahead for the June exodus, and both storage space and transport are gone by the last week of term.
How much storage space does a student need?
Most single rooms come down to four to eight boxes plus a couple of loose items, which fits a small locker rather than a room. Sharing a larger unit between flatmates is usually cheaper per person than each taking the smallest available unit.
Can I store things over the summer and get them back in September?
Yes, and that is the standard arrangement. The thing to confirm in writing is the redelivery date, because September slots book up and arriving back to find a two-week wait is a common and avoidable problem.
Do I need insurance for stored belongings?
Check rather than assume. Cover is frequently sold separately from the storage itself and is often capped at a low figure. If you are storing a laptop, a monitor or anything else of real value, confirm what is actually covered before you hand it over.
What is the cheapest way to store belongings as a student in Edinburgh?
Splitting a single unit between flatmates, having sorted honestly through what is worth keeping first. The second saving is transport: booking one vehicle for several people beats three separate trips, particularly out of a tenement flat.
Before you book
Work out your lease end date, then your return date, then the volume. Those three answers determine which option makes sense and roughly what it should cost. Book transport before storage, because in June the vehicles run out before the space does.
